The Men’s Fistball World Championship will be held in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, in 2027, marking the return of the sport’s largest international event to the state of Rio Grande do Sul and to a venue of profound historical significance for Fistball. The competition will be hosted by Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo (SGNH), one of the most traditional and renowned Fistball clubs worldwide, in partnership with the International Fistball Association (IFA).
The decision revives an emblematic chapter in the history of Fistball: in October 1976, Novo Hamburgo hosted the first World Championship held outside Europe – the third World Championship in the sport’s history. More than five decades later, the global Fistball community will once again turn its attention to the city in southern Brazil. Twelve years after the most recent Men’s World Championship in South America (2015/Argentina), the Fistball World Championship will return to Latin America. The last World Championship held in Brazil took place in 2003 in Porto Alegre, just around 50 kilometers from Novo Hamburgo.
Brazil Secures Hosting Rights After Revised Bidding Procedure
The decision in favor of Brazil followed a new bidding process. After the withdrew of the planned host, Brazil submitted a bid and convinced the IFA with the proposal from Novo Hamburgo, supported by a solid organizational concept, proven experience, and a strong sporting tradition. IFA President Gastão Englert visited Novo Hamburgo in person at the end of December to finalize the last details with the local organizers. “We are very pleased that we have found the right venue for the Men’s Fistball World Championship 2027 in Novo Hamburgo,” Englert said: “Brazil showed strong interest immediately after the new bidding process. At Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo, we see a highly motivated organizing team with extensive experience in international Fistball. Together, we want to deliver a World Championship that sets new standards both on and off the field and further strengthens Fistball in South America.”
Strong Sporting Environment Makes Brazil an Attractive Host Nation
From a sporting perspective, Brazil also represents an especially attractive host. Numerous players from Novo Hamburgo currently form the core of the Brazilian men’s national team. This team celebrated its title victory at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, and will therefore enter the 2027 World Championship as one of the top contenders for the title. The Seleção can not only rely on strong home support but is also considered one of the leading candidates for the gold medal on sporting merit.
The final of the Fistball World Championship is scheduled to take place on the weekend of 16/17 October 2027. The days leading up to it will feature the preliminary round matches followed by the knockout stage. The exact match schedule and tournament period will be finalized shortly in coordination between the host and the International Fistball Association.
Host Club Emphasizes Historical Significance of Return
Excitement is also high on the part of the hosting club. Jorge Leandro Dhein, President of Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo, highlighted the special significance of the announcement: “It is with immense pride and a strong sense of responsibility that we announce the return of the Fistball World Championship to Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo. This event speaks directly to our history, our sporting tradition, and the club’s deep connection with Fistball – a discipline in which we have won eight world titles and projected both our athletes and our institution into the international stage.”
Hosting the World Championship in 2027, in the year when Sociedade Ginástica celebrates its 133rd anniversary and the municipality of Novo Hamburgo marks 100 years of emancipation, makes this moment even more symbolic. “We are fully confident that, in partnership with the IFA and with the support of the CBDT, we will deliver a championship of excellence, with organization, infrastructure, and hospitality worthy of the importance of this event, leaving a lasting legacy for the club, the city, and the global Fistball community”, says Dhein.
CBDT Underlines National Impact of Hosting the MWC
For Júlio Ebert, President of the Brazilian Fistball Confederation (CBDT), the World Championship represents a milestone for the sport in the country: “I congratulate and thank Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo for assuming the responsibility of hosting the world’s largest Fistball event, demonstrating strategic vision, institutional courage, and a high level of organizational capability. I recognize and value the work of directors, professionals, partners, and collaborators who contributed to making this project a reality from its earliest stages.” He also thank the IFA President, Gastão Englert, for the trust placed in Brazil. Ebert: “The CBDT reaffirms its commitment, together with Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo and with the support of the IFA, to deliver a World Championship of the highest technical and organizational standards, strengthening Brazilian Fistball and leaving a sporting, institutional, and international legacy for the discipline.”
Expanded International Participation
While six national teams participated in the 1976 World Championship, the 2027 edition is expected to feature up to 16 teams from all continents – the maximum number permitted by the IFA. Places will be allocated according to the federation’s qualification criteria, taking into account continental championships and the results of the 2023 World Championship in Germany.

Die Faustball-Weltmeisterschaft der Männer wird 2027 im brasilianischen Novo Hamburgo ausgetragen. Damit kehrt das größte internationale Faustball-Event in den Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul zurück – an einen Ort mit großer historischer Bedeutung für den Faustballsport. Ausgerichtet wird die Weltmeisterschaft von der Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo, einem der renommiertesten Faustball-Klubs weltweit, in Zusammenarbeit mit der International Fistball Association (IFA).
Es war ein historischer Moment: Im Oktober 1976 war Novo Hamburgo im Süden von Brasilien Schauplatz der ersten Faustball-Weltmeisterschaft außerhalb Europas, der insgesamt dritten WM der Geschichte. Mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte später wird die Faustball-Welt erneut in die Stadt im Süden Brasiliens blicken. Zwölf Jahre nach der bis dato letzten Männer-Weltmeisterschaft in Südamerika (2015/Argentinien) wird der Faustball-Weltmeister wieder in Lateinamerika ermittelt. Die letzte WM in Brasilien hatte 2003 in Porto Alegre, nur rund 50 Kilometer von Novo Hamburgo entfernt, stattgefunden. Nun hat die International Fistball Association (IFA) die Weltmeisterschaft erneut in den Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul vergeben.
Ausrichter mit schlüssigem Gesamtkonzept
Die Vergabe nach Brasilien erfolgte nach einer Neuausschreibung. Nach dem Rückzug des geplanten Gastgebers reichte der brasilianische Verband Confederacao Brasileira de Desportes Terrestres (CBDT) eine Bewerbung ein – und überzeugte schließlich mit dem Standort Novo Hamburgo. Neben einem schlüssigen Gesamtkonzept besticht der Verein auch über nachgewiesene Erfahrung bei der Ausrichtung von nationalen und internationalen Events sowie einer eindrucksvollen sportliche Tradition. IFA-Präsident Gastão Englert war Ende Dezember persönlich in Novo Hamburgo, um letzte Details mit dem Ausrichter zu klären. „Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir mit Novo Hamburgo den geeigneten Standort für die Faustball-Weltmeisterschaft der Männer 2027 gefunden haben“, erklärte Englert. „Brasilien hat nach der Neuausschreibung sofort großes Interesse gezeigt. Bei der Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo erleben wir ein hochmotiviertes Organisationsteam mit großer Erfahrung im internationalen Faustball. Gemeinsam wollen wir eine Weltmeisterschaft auf die Beine stellen, die sportlich wie organisatorisch neue Maßstäbe setzt und den Faustball in Südamerika weiter stärkt.“
Brasilien als attraktives Gastgeberland
Ein sportlicher Faktor macht Brasilien zusätzlich zu einem hochattraktiven Gastgeber: Zahlreiche Spieler aus Novo Hamburgo bilden aktuell den Kern der brasilianischen Männer-Nationalmannschaft. Diese feierte 2025 bei den World Games in Chengdu (China) den Titelgewinn und geht damit 2027 als einer der Top-Favoriten auf den Weltmeistertitel an den Start. Die Seleção darf somit nicht nur auf die Unterstützung des heimischen Publikums hoffen, sondern zählt auch sportlich zu den heißesten Anwärtern auf Gold.
Geplant ist, dass das Endspiel der Faustball-Weltmeisterschaft am Wochenende vom 16./17. Oktober 2027 ausgetragen wird. In den Tagen zuvor stehen die Vorrundenspiele sowie die anschließenden K.o.-Duelle auf dem Programm. Der genaue Zeitraum der Spieltage wird in Kürze zwischen dem Ausrichter und der International Fistball Association final abgestimmt.
Gastgeber betont historische Bedeutung der Rückkehr
Auch auf Seiten des Gastgebervereins ist die Vorfreude groß. Jorge Leandro Dhein, Präsident von Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo, hob die besondere Bedeutung der Ausrichtung hervor: „Mit großem Stolz und einem starken Pflichtbewusstsein geben wir die Rückkehr der Faustball-Weltmeisterschaft zur Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo bekannt. Diese Veranstaltung steht in direktem Zusammenhang mit unserer Geschichte, unserer sportlichen Tradition und der tiefen Verbundenheit des Vereins mit dem Faustball – einer Sportart, in der wir acht Klub-Weltmeistertitel gewonnen und sowohl unsere Athleten als auch unseren Verein auf die internationale Bühne gebracht haben.“
Die Ausrichtung der Weltmeisterschaft im Jahr 2027, in dem die Sociedade Ginástica ihr 133-jähriges Bestehen feiert und die Gemeinde Novo Hamburgo 100 Jahre Emanzipation begeht, macht diesen Moment noch symbolträchtiger. „Wir sind fest davon überzeugt, dass wir in Zusammenarbeit mit der IFA und mit Unterstützung von CBDT eine hervorragende Meisterschaft mit einer Organisation, Infrastruktur und Gastfreundschaft veranstalten werden, die der Bedeutung dieses Ereignisses gerecht wird und dem Verein, der Stadt und der gesamten Faustball-Gemeinschaft ein bleibendes Andenken hinterlassen wird“, sagt Dhein.
CBDT unterstreicht nationale Bedeutung der Ausrichtung
Für Júlio Ebert, Präsident des brasilianischen Faustballverbands (CBDT), ist die Weltmeisterschaft ein Meilenstein für den Sport in seinem Land: „Ich gratuliere und danke der Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo dafür, dass sie die Verantwortung für die Ausrichtung des weltweit größten Faustball-Events übernommen hat und damit strategische Weitsicht, institutionellen Mut und ein hohes Maß an organisatorischer Kompetenz bewiesen hat. Ich würdige und schätze die Arbeit der Direktoren, Fachleute, Partner und Mitarbeiter, die dazu beigetragen haben, dieses Projekt von Anfang an zu verwirklichen.“ Er dankte auch dem IFA-Präsidenten Gastão Englert für das Vertrauen, das er Brasilien entgegengebracht hat. Ebert: „Die CBDT bekräftigt ihr Engagement, gemeinsam mit der Sociedade Ginástica Novo Hamburgo und mit Unterstützung der IFA eine Weltmeisterschaft auf höchstem technischem und organisatorischem Niveau zu veranstalten, den brasilianischen Faustball zu stärken und ein sportliches, institutionelles und internationales Erbe für unsere Sportart zu hinterlassen.“
Große internationale Beteiligung
Während an der Weltmeisterschaft 1976 sechs Nationalmannschaften teilnahmen, werden bei der Ausgabe 2027 voraussichtlich bis zu 16 Mannschaften von allen Kontinenten antreten – die maximale Anzahl, die von der IFA zugelassen ist. Die Plätze werden nach den Qualifikationskriterien des Verbandes vergeben, wobei die Kontinentalmeisterschaften und die Ergebnisse der Weltmeisterschaft 2023 in Deutschland berücksichtigt werden.
